Nowruz 2585 · A film by IRSA

We remember the brave.

On the nights of January 8 and 9, 2026, the Islamic Republic cut Iran’s internet and opened fire on civilians who had taken to the streets. Independent verification of the toll is still ongoing.

The IRSA team made this short film for Nowruz 2585 — a quiet tribute to the women, men and children who did not come home. Press play when you are ready.

A Call to Conscience.

“Never Again” must mean never again for anyone, anywhere.

A 180-page witness record assembling what is known about January 2026 — names, places, hospital reports, satellite testimony — alongside the independent verification work being done by HRANA, the BBC, Iran International, Amnesty and Human Rights Watch.

The preprint is openly readable. It is documentation, not commentary. It exists so the record cannot be quietly walked back.

Forty-eight hours.

A communications blackout. Snipers on rooftops. Hospitals raided for the wounded. The shape of the two days that everyone documenting this story keeps returning to.

  1. Dec 28, 2025

Nationwide demonstrations begin after months of compounding pressure on the streets.

  2. Jan 8, 8:00 PM

Approximately 99% of Iran's internet connectivity is cut. Phone lines follow.

  3. Jan 8–9, 2026

The forty-eight hours from which the bulk of the verified records — hospital photographs, morgue footage, family testimony — would later be reconstructed.

  4. Jan 13, 2026

Iran International publishes its multi-stage investigation, drawing on sources inside hospitals, morgues, and the security apparatus.

  5. Feb 1, 2026

HRANA records 6,842 confirmed deaths and 11,280 additional cases under verification.

Independently documented.

These are not our numbers. They are the figures published, with methodology, by organisations whose verification standards have been tested against earlier atrocities — and whose sources inside Iran took on personal risk to make the record exist.

HRANA
6,842
Confirmed deaths by name, with 11,280 further cases still under verification (Feb 1, 2026).
BBC Verify
~200
Bodies geolocated and forensically authenticated in a single Tehran morgue, the youngest a 16-year-old.
Iran International
≥ 12,000
Conservative civilian death estimate for January 8–9, based on hospital, morgue and inside-government sources.
Upper estimates
30k–36.5k
Range cited across diplomatic and press reporting for the 48-hour window. Verification ongoing.

Figures current as of the preprint’s documentation cut-off on February 4, 2026. Verification work by all four organisations is ongoing.

Our Position · 01

We preserve the voices others want silenced and publish what fear tries to bury.

Iran Watch is the civic-record arm of IRSA — the Iranian Student Association at UCF. We organize awareness events, archive verified evidence, and publish first-hand testimony from witnesses inside Iran, so that what the regime denies, the world is forced to read.
